Welcome Hollie!

Hollie lives in Newcastle-under-Lyme, in Staffordshire, England. She is eighteen years old and in her final year at school, where she studies German, History, and English Literature. She has spent one week at our library and answered me some questions.

Why did you come to Erlangen?

I have come to Erlangen in order to improve my German speaking skills and learn more about German culture by experiencing day-to-day life in my German twin-town of Erlangen. I have found that my German language has improved immensely since being immersed into German life during my time in Erlangen. I am staying in Erlangen for eleven days during my February half-term.

Do you like Erlangen?

Erlangen is a delightful Baroque-style city with lots of things to see and do. I especially like the Schlossgarten with the Huguenot fountain and the botanical garden; it is a great place to sit and relax. The market place is also very lively with many cafés and quirky shops. The town museum is another very interesting building where I have been able to learn a lot about the town’s history.

How about your time in the library?

I have greatly enjoyed working in the town library. For the first two days, I worked in the children’s library and had a lot of fun learning about how the library works. I also went shopping for Fasching decorations and materials the children will use to make costume-masks. On Wednesday, I went on the Bücherbus and visited a local school where the children who cannot come regularly to the town libray can also loan and return books.

I like that the library is a place that anyone can come and enjoy spending time in. The library has every kind of book that you could wish for, from specialist-information books to the latest sci-fi novel, and the team at the library are more than happy to help you find one. The best asset at the library is the team, who are all exceptionally friendly and welcoming.

What are your future plans?

In September, I am going to university to study History and German. In my third year, I can study at a German university, work in German business, and teach English in a German school. I am excited to spend a year living in Germany and hopefully visit Erlangen again!

Thank you Hollie!
